Is there a shortage of 5.7x28mm ammunition? Why?
As of October 2012, there is still a shortage of 5.7x28mm ammunition on the U.S. commercial market. The industry has seen an unprecedented spike in demand over the past six months. This was due to a “perfect storm” of media speculation surrounding several federal procurement initiatives coupled with the traditional surge in firearms and ammunition sales prior to major political elections. This spike was difficult to predict and left the two primary manufacturers of the 5.7x28mm round – FN Herstal and Fiocchi – struggling to catch up.
-
Is FN going to stop making the 5.7x28mm round?
As of October 2012, FN Herstal is continuing production of its popular SS195LF round and is moving forward with plans to adjust production in the coming months in anticipation that this high demand will continue into 2013. FNH USA has also been working with Federal Cartridge Company to develop a new SS197 plinking round, which was released in limited quantities to the commercial market in August 2012. Additional quantities of this new round will be released to the market over the next six months.
-
What is FN doing to increase production of their SS195LF round?
Over the past several months, FNH USA management has been working very closely with our parent company, FN Herstal, to both increase production of the SS195LF round and expedite its import into the U.S. and distribution to dealers. As of October, we are expecting three shipments from Belgium over the next six months. The first shipment is currently awaiting approval of an export license and could be on dealer shelves as early as mid-November. Two additional shipments will follow. In the meantime, we are also working with Federal Cartridge Company to release additional rounds of SS197SR currently in reserve. We will release shipment dates for these rounds shortly.
-
When will more 5.7x28mm ammunition be available?
We hope consumers will see an influx of additional rounds of SS197SR and SS195LF to the market sometime in November. Please note that we anticipate demand of 5.7x28mm ammunition to remain high for at least the next year and ask consumers to be patient with us while we baseline the “new normal” and adjust manufacturing quantities accordingly.
-
How can I find 5.7x28mm ammunition?
There are a variety of ways to locate 5.7x28mm ammunition for purchase. First, we suggest you contact your local FN dealer. To find a dealer near you, please visit our website at www.fnhusa.com and type your zip code into the FN Dealer Locator box. If they do not have in stock, we suggest you visit our Facebook page. We have found our loyal FN fans to be the best, most up-to-date source of information about where to purchase 5.7x28mm ammunition, especially for particular areas of the country.
